sorry for the massive post. pointing you to flickr account wasn't going to satisfy the need to share my snappies.
got home from geekfest early monday morning. last i remember i was driving somewhere over the oregon border, switching drivers, falling asleep and waking up pulling into SF. super exhausting trip with our overnight drives there and back.
speakers were awesome. mike davis is the most incredible man i've ever heard speak to a group of people. and making pictures this weekend was SO MUCH FUN. i cannot describe how inspired i am after meeting so many people and hearing so many different stories. and mike davis talks about pictures in a way i never even thought of. i'm still pealing away all the layers of what he said, trying to find myself and my vision in there somewhere. if there was one thing that i immediately took away from all those speakers, it is that our photos are ourselves and our character and our personality. and i had never thought of pictures in that way.
best 30 bucks i could have ever spent. better then poyi. better then vii. incredibly intimate and inspiring.
day one.
started our trip on wednesday night, leaving stockton at about 11:30 pm. ariel, nathan and i split the driving time and got to portland through the night. we brushed our teeth in a salem bathroom and then met sol, tom and crew for breakfast at a bar. i ate a lot of broccoli and cauliflower knowing how exhausting this weekend was going to be. i think that was the last planned meal we ate and the rest of the weekend was a blur.
then we went to powells to drool over expensive books.
then we checked in to the jupiter and took some much needed naps.
and then it was time to say hey to everyone over at bruce ely's. bruce is the nicest guy i think any of us met all weekend. he was a super rad host. we ate lots of hot dogs, drank a lot of beer, and i got my ass kicked by l.e. baskow in air hockey. ariel is the reigning geekfest 07 champ.
sol stood in all sorts of cool light this weekend (in addition to sporting a really rad nacho libre mask), and i got strobed.
john white found good light to stand in too.
then we left to go check out some portland bars. did you know that you can buy cigarettes out of vending machines at some places up there?? weird.
day two.
after walking for DAYS to get my car way down on the south side, i went out and made diptychs. (they are at the bottom of the post). that night the portlanders took a bunch of us out wandering around to some bars.
and bruce ely showed off how totally awesome he is while playing p-town host.
there were a lot of photographers and a lot of photographers taking pictures of photographers. this is john henry trying not to mug for my camera.
it was fleet week in portland. and there were a lot of people making out all over the place. my super drunkeness didn't capture this very well.
bruce took us to go eat donuts and then proceeded to preach to the people walking by on the widewalk. what about i don't remember. i didn't get a donut but apparently they are amazing. so don't forget voodoo donut when you are in portland.
after the bar, a few of us walked back to the jupiter. it was cold and wet when we walked across the burnside bridge. i think this is james gregg, david zentz and nate. this is one of the last pictures i remember taking. then nate and i found some friends back at the jupiter and hung out until the sun was up.
more random pictures from the day.
drive home.
we said goodbye to everyone at breakfast and then hit the road.
diptychs!! thank you thomas boyd for thinking up this little gem. everyone, even people on other teams were totally inspired by it.
